FITS®is short for Freedom、Intensive、Tutorial and Self. Our teaching encourages students to engage in this type of study. It isa new educational method evolved from research and careful design by A+Global Education. It integrates and inherits the best of both British and Chinese education, British education emphasises free self-directed study while Chinese education focuses on intensive supervised study.
For Chinese high school students who plan to study in the UK, failure to adapt themselves to British education is the biggest problem they will meet when they begin to study foundation programs there. They have to study by themselves, without the teachers’supervision or assigned exercises. Therefore, most feel it is difficult to fully engage themselves in British courses. Students who have taken the College Entrance Examination in China, tend to indulge themselves when they are suddenly given so much freedom, but they soon regret this when the exam and assessment time comes. Since the students’class attendance and exam results are linked with their UK visa, many students, in spite of their regret, can do nothing but return to their home country.
In British higher education, self-directed study is very important. As the curriculum progresses fast, many teachers will require students to read some materials before class so that they are able to follow in classTeachers will also ask students to do some reading and guided self-study so that they can digest what they have learned and open up their minds, such as with free study the reading tasks before and after class are not completely the same as the textbooks. On the contrary, a lot of knowledge from the extra reading complements the textbook, usually about different opinions put forward by different scholars. Through comparing, analysing, and understanding in their free study, students can grasp more new knowledge. This is rarely involved in Chinese higher education. It is an important difference between Chinese and British education, as well as an ability that Chinese overseas students must have.
For each student who wants to study in a top university in the UK, intensive, supervised, self-directed, free study is very important. We are trying hard to help students enhance these study abilities. At the initial stage of our curriculum, we will continue the intensive and supervised study characterised by Chinese high schools. This makes students adapt to the English teaching environment and helps them improve self-study abilities more rapidly. At a later stage, we encourage students to engage in free study in the majors which they are interested in. All of our students from 2010 got offers from many different universities for different majors for further detail please refer to the Students Whereabouts Form on the following page.) We have students who got offers from subjects such as psychology and art and design. These are the benefits of our encouragement to the students to do free study. Besides the courses of the student’s own major, the student can select other courses as well. Although many Chinese students want to select other courses, they tend to give up selecting their interested courses due to lack of fundamental knowledge. So, we encourage our students to do free study, to read and learn more knowledge so as to lay solid foundations for future selective courses.
