Heriot-Watt University

Overview

Heriot-Watt is the eighth oldest higher education institution in the UK. Its origins date back to 1821 when it was a celebrated people’s college. Heriot-Watt received its university charter in 1966 although its name was already well established in the 19th century. The University's main campus is on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Strengths

  • The University specialises in teaching and research in the following areas: built environment, engineering and physical sciences, life sciences, MBAs and DBAs, management and languages, mathematics and computer science, petroleum engineering, textiles and design.
  • In the last UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), Heriot-Watt came top in the UK for Petroleum Engineering and Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics, and top in Scotland for the Built Environment, Applied Mathematics, Food Science and Technology, Business and Management and Chemical Engineering.
  • All new international undergraduate and postgraduate students will be guaranteed a room in a hall of residence or flat.
  • HWU has a 380 acre main campus in Edinburgh.
  • The International Airport is five minutes by car from the Edinburgh Campus. There are direct scheduled flights to many European cities.
  • Edinburgh has 12 festivals each year with the world-famous International Festival being held every August.
  • The sports village facilities include: tennis, badminton, rugby, football, cricket, netball and basketball, hockey, squash, cardiovascular and weights suite, and indoor golf facility.
  • The University library on the Edinburghcampus has access to networked information databases and full-text journals. It has over 650 study places and there are seventy PC Caledonia workstations.
  • An on-campus health centre provides quality medical, nursing, dental and ancillary healthcare, including a physiotherapist. Services are available to students irrespective of where they reside.
  • The Careers Advisory Service helps students find jobs by offering a range of services. A career information fair is held annually, in which more than 40 organisations offer information on careers open to students.
