Bangor University

Overview

Founded in 1884, Bangor University is one of the oldest and most prestigious degree awarding bodies in the UK. The UK Government identified world leading research in all of Bangor’s 19 assessed subject areas in its latest Research Assessment Exercise 2008 (RAE).

Accounting & Finance were ranked Number 1 in the UK, Electronic Engineering Number 2, with Sport Science, Arts & Humanities, Psychology, Earth Systems & Environmental Sciences all gaining top ratings.

Bangor is a very conveniently located within the UK. Manchester and Liverpool, less than 2 hours away, are great destinations for shopping, and for attending music concerts and world-class football matches.

Strengths

  • Over 2,300 en-suite or standard study bedrooms are available on three main residential sites, all within easy walking distance of the University buildings and the city centre.
  • The main accommodation site also houses the University’s Sports Centre, outdoor astro-turf sports fields and a café bar.
  • Bangor is easy to reach from UK international airports – 2 hours from Manchester International Airport and just over 3 hours from London.
  • Crime rates are amongst the lowest in the UK – so it’s a safe place to study and its compact nature means that everywhere in Bangor is within safe walking distance.
  • A new £35 million Arts and Innovation Centre is due for completion in 2012 and will include state of the art teaching spaces, a theatre and outdoor ampitheatre, an innovation hub, digital showcase facilities, bar and café.
  • Library facilities at Bangor include an extensive collection of books and journals, databases, videos, CDs, micro-materials and manuscripts collections.
  • The University has its own sports centre, athletics track and sports fields providing students with good indoor and outdoor sporting facilities.
  • A meeting service is offered for all international students on their 'arrival weekend' at Manchester International Airport. Students are transported from Manchester to their new home in Bangor by bus.
